Brand Design in Focus!


The bicycle industry has long defined itself through its brands and design, providing consumers with comprehensive brand experiences along all customer touchpoints. The German Design Council has now granted the industry and its outstanding achievements a competition of its very own: the Bicycle Brand Contest honours excellent product and communication design and acknowledges the industry's achievements in brand communication.


"Today the goal is no longer simply to sell bicycles," explains Andrej Kupetz, CEO of the German Design Council. "Many companies are focused on customer relationships and providing products and services which go beyond the bicycle itself. Consistent brand strategies are terribly important, and this means first and foremost having a consistent design language. The Bicycle Brand Contest is the German Design Council's way of providing precisely this aspect of the bicycle industry with a properly focussed competition — one that makes it possible for an independent jury to compare the best the industry has to offer."

The jury of the 2016 Bicycle Brand Contest consisted of an independent panel of experts from the worlds of the media, design and brand communication. The competition's varied range of entries from the areas of product and communication design were assessed by the jury not only in terms of product aesthetics, functionality and sustainability, but also in terms of a consistent brand strategy.

The German Design Council

The German Design Council is one of the world’s leading competence centres for communication and brand management in the field of design. Its members currently include over 230 companies. The German Design Council was founded in 1953 on the initiative of the German Bundestag to strengthen design competence in the German industry. Its varied activities have just one aim, namely to communicate the sustainable increase in brand value through the strategic use of design.
